About This Workshop:

Join us for the Inland Library System YA Committee’s first annual “Everything YA in One Day,” a day-long workshop specifically for Teen/Tween librarians. This event will provide teen and tween librarians with programming ideas for several recurring events—as well as helpful advice regarding STEAM programming, collection development, and how to form a Teen Advisory Board. Throughout the day there will be plenty of time to network and share your own great ideas!

The event will culminate in a panel discussion about book censorship and the need for increased diversity in library collections. The panel features YA Authors Elana K Arnold (Infandous) and B.T. Gottfred (Forever for a Year), as well as Public Librarian Franklin Escobedo and School Librarian Julieta Kendall. Book sale and signing to follow. Panel bios and full schedule of the day’s activities follow below.

Meet the Panel

Franklin Escobedo

Franklin Escobedo is the principal Librarian for Coronado Public Library. Mr. Escobedo has been working in Libraries for twenty years. Upon graduating from Library School he began his professional career at the Oceanside Public Library (2007-2014) as their Young Adult Services Librarian and eventually became one of the Principal Librarians for Oceanside. In 2014 he returned to the Coronado Public Library as the Principal Librarian. Mr. Escobedo has served on the YALSA Popular Paperbacks for Young Adult Committee (2009-2013), 2014 Outstanding Books for College Bound, Outstanding Achievement Award Jury, 2016 Printz Award Committee, and 2017 YALSA Nominating Committee. Mr. Escobedo was also the Liaison for the GLBT-RT to YALSA from 2009-2013. At the local level Mr. Escobedo was involved in Serra Cooperative Youth Services Committee and is currently active in the local chapter of REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library & Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking. Throughout his career, Mr. Escobedo has advocated for services for all underserved populations.

Julieta Kendall

Julieta Kendall is the K-8 librarian for Saint Catherine of Alexandria Catholic School in Riverside, where both her sons attend. It’s also the school she attended as a child. She recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Diocese for her work in the library—work that she stumbled into after years in healthcare and a brief time spent practicing law. One day she volunteered in the SCA library (her favorite place as a student at SCA) to satisfy a school service hours requirement. At that point, SCA was without a librarian for at least two years and was operated by parents on a volunteer basis. Books everywhere, with no order, no system, nothing. She asked administration if she could organize the shelves, and of course they agreed (and looked at her funny). After that project, the administration was so pleased that they invited her to be the official “volunteer librarian.” That was four years ago, and now Ms. Kendall works there as the school librarian.

ELANA K. ARNOLD

ELANA K. ARNOLD writes books for and about children and teens. Some of her books have been included on the LA Public Library's Best Books of the Year list, the Bank Street Best Book list, the YALSA "Best Fiction for Young Adults" list, have been ALAN picks, and have been selected for inclusion in the Amelia Bloomer Project. Her most recent YA novel, INFANDOUS, won the Moonbeam Children's Book Award. Her middle grade titles are THE QUESTION OF MIRACLES and FAR FROM FAIR. She holds a master's degree in Creative Writing/Fiction from the University of California, Davis and currently lives in Huntington Beach, California, with her husband, two children, and a menagerie of animals.

B. T. Gottfred

B. T. Gottfred is an author, playwright, and director. His debut novel, Forever for a Year, was released in July 2015 and received a Publishers Weekly starred review. His second novel, “The Nerdy and the Dirty” arrives in November 2016.
